For many of us, summer is a time for socialising with friends, spending time outdoors and making the most of the warmer weather and lighter nights. One great way to get into the summer spirit, however, is by drinking a cocktail or two. We've put together some of our favourite summer cocktail recipes below – don't forget to pair them with the ice machines and glass frosters that we offer on our website for a cool and refreshing tipple.
Tequila Sunrise Mimosas
Packed with oranges, tequila and grenadine, the Tequila Sunrise Mimosas is a real summer favourite. Rim some cocktail glasses with an orange wedge, and then dip them in sugar for a tasty addition to your drink. In each cocktail glass, pour in an ounce (around 30 millilitres) of tequila, and then fill the glass half way with champagne or sparkling wine. Next, add some orange juice and little grenadine and stir. Don’t forget to add an attractive wedge of orange to the side of the cocktail glass to help you get into the spirit of summer. Delicious!
Pina Colada Pineapple Cups
With this recipe, you can forget about washing up – as your drink will be served in a pineapple cup! Cut off the pineapple tops (you'll need a pineapple for each drink) and then scoop out the insides of the pineapple. Make sure you don't pierce through the bottom of the fruit (we recommend leaving a two-inch base to be on the safe side). Drizly has put together an excellent guide on how to cut your pineapple cups correctly. When you're done, cut the pineapple that you have removed into chunks, and then mix them in a blender with four ounces of coconut cream, four ounces of light rum and an ounce of dark run. Add in some ice, coconut milk and a splash of pineapple juice before blending. Pour into two pineapple cups, and finish off with a decorative straw and a tiny umbrella.
Watermelon Sangria
It takes just a couple of minutes to make this tasty sangria, and you don’t need to be a cocktail connoisseur, either. Get a blender, and combine four cups of cubed watermelon with rum, lime juice, zest, sugar and Moscato. Blend the ingredients together until smooth, and then refrigerate for an hour or two. Finish your drink with lime and serve in beakers with crushed ice. Add frozen watermelon to your glass to increase its aesthetic appeal.
Spicy Beetroot Bloody Marys
For this summer cocktail recipe, you'll need an oven. Preheat it to 200 degrees, and roast three medium-sized red beetroots for 45 minutes. When they're cooked, let them cool, and then blend them together with tomato juice, pepperoncini juice, lemon juice, pepper, horseradish and garlic until it's a smooth liquid. Pour into four glasses with ice and top with chilled vodka. Finish off your cocktail with a stick of celery for an extra kick.
Rainbow Sangria
No summer garden party would be complete without a huge cocktail to share – so consider this rainbow sangria recipe, designed by Country Living. You'll need grapes, blueberries, kiwi, pineapple, cantaloupe, oranges, strawberries and a half cup of lemon juice. Add them all together in a clear serving beaker, and then pour a bottle of chilled white wine and a cup of triple sec over the top. If you're planning a garden party on the evening, then make this drink in the morning to give the flavours a chance to soak in – and don't forget to bring spoons to polish off the fruit when you've finished the sangria!
Always drink responsibly
Summer is a great time of year to enjoy a cocktail or two with your friends and family – but always drink responsibly. As DrinkAware writes, men and women should not regularly drink more than fourteen units in a week. That means no more than six glasses of wine, five pints of cider or fourteen single servings of spirits. Cocktails can be lethal – especially when you don’t follow the recipes and add more alcohol than is recommended – so be sure to stick to the guidelines and make your guests aware of how much alcohol they're consuming.
There you have it – five of our favourite summer cocktail recipes. Don’t forget to invest in one of the Corr Chilled ice machines or glass frosters to add more fun and excitement to your cocktail party, and be sure to check back soon for more exciting summer recipes.
