There are many different rumoured fixes for a burning mouth when you've eaten something that's just a little too spicy. So we've done some research and found out what actually works and what would just make it worse!
Dairy, oil, starches and sugars all help to either soak up or dissolve the chemical compound that causes the burning sensation in your mouth, capsaicin. Stay away from water-based products as these will spread the burn around your mouth, making the burning sensation worse. Milk is the most popular antidote for a burning mouth, it has casein which helps break the bonds of capsaicin. Sugar is also a great combatant for spicy food, the well known Scoville Heat Unit is based off how much sugar is needed to neutralise the heat in a chili pepper.
